The Intersection between Quantum & Cybersecurity
I was lucky enough to work with some very smart folks who let me loose with a demonstration of using quantum computing to decrypt encrypted messages. It was a bit cheesy as the messages were revealed in real time, but proved the point that quantum and decryption was not a question of "if" but "when". This started the inevitable conversation around when and what could be done to protect ourselves. So quantum and cyber became bound together. As quantum computing and algorithms become more powerful and commonplace, so the decryption risk increases, whether from the "Hack and Crack Later" attacks or from near real-time decryption. Anything protected by 32-bit encryption is already at risk, however your Whatsapp messages are safe. For the time being.
Listen to
Eric Smithmier, Supervisory Special Agent at the FBI (yes the FBI) Cyber Division,
Will Oliver, Professor of Physics & Director, Center for Quantum Engineering at MIT (yep and that one too) and
Steve Suarez, moderator and founder of HorizonX Consulting discuss the intersection between quantum and cybersecurity.
